Summary

In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind。 Beth Greer was the perfect suspect--a rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes。 But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion。

Oregon, 2017Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Cases--a passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child。 When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview。 To Shea's surprise, Beth says yes。

They meet regularly at Beth's mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there。 Items move when she's not looking, and she could swear she's seen a girl outside the window。 The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn't right。 Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?

A true crime blogger gets more than she bargained for while interviewing the woman acquitted of two cold case slayings in this chilling new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel。

I have been in a reading funk。 This book got me out of it。Solid supernatural thriller/mystery。 I enjoyed this book more than The Sundown Motel。

I honestly had no idea what direction this was going to go in, so it took me a while to adjust to the plot twist。 But I really, really liked this book。 The writing is great, the characters are interesting (especially Beth, who I love), and the story unfolds in a very entertaining, readable way。 A really great, semi-spooky read。

Good ol’ ghost story

Didn't work for me。 Plot elements we've seen many times before, and must admit I missed the promised atmospheric touches。 Didn't work for me。 Plot elements we've seen many times before, and must admit I missed the promised atmospheric touches。 。。。more

Ahhh, finally! I think Ms。 St James has finally nailed a novel。I stumbled across her first at a library and have read every book, and they're all good, but every single one came up a bit short for me。 Even I'm not bored enough to re-read every word of every review to quote me on why, but it doesn't matter today, because this one worked very well for me。Shea is a murderino。 She has a website。 She's also a victim of crime, which partly drives her obsession, and because of that history, she lives a Ahhh, finally! 2。5 stars。 Kind of dragged through the middle for me。 I also hate when books take forever to end。 The story ended 80 pages ago, why are you STILL writing??

I don’t feel confident in rating this。 It’s sticking in my head but a book that left me off balanced。 Interesting, but not lovable?

I enjoyed it, but dragged a little at the end。

Outstanding thriller, particularly for those who love true crime, Investigation Discovery, and mysteries that can't be put down。St。 James does an amazing job weaving a tapestry of key players from 40 years ago to solve multiple, linked homicides。Highly recommend! I liked these characters and this story quite a lot。 But what I really liked was the tone。 Not too sneaky, too sinister, too serious。 Light at times。 There's no huge twist at the end - altho I liked the final chapters。 This was a thriller for those of us who read too many thrillers。 4 stars even - can't wait to read more from this author I liked these characters and this story quite a lot。 But what I really liked was the tone。 Not too sneaky, too sinister, too serious。 Light at times。 There's no huge twist at the end - altho I liked the final chapters。 This was a thriller for those of us who read too many thrillers。 4 stars even - can't wait to read more from this author 。。。more

I don’t even know where to start。 This entire book lacked creativity。 When there was an issue, new horror rules were written to get around them, and it made the whole thing feel cheap。 The characters weren’t believable and they were all annoying。 And the editor must have been skipping around a lot, because if I took a red pen to this book, it would look as if it had been murdered。 Perhaps it should be。

It's okay, entertaining not as compelling as The Sun Down Motel。 It felt a bit rambling, and I couldn't really get interested in the characters。 It's okay, entertaining not as compelling as The Sun Down Motel。 It felt a bit rambling, and I couldn't really get interested in the characters。 。。。more

Definitely not one of St。 James' better efforts。 She had a bunch of really good ideas, but it didn't really come together all that well。 Definitely not one of St。 James' better efforts。 She had a bunch of really good ideas, but it didn't really come together all that well。 。。。more

Simone has done it again! Great story with a bit of a supernatural twist! Every book I’ve read of hers has been great, but not predictable! Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC!

I was so on the fence about reading this book and now I feel guilty as hell about it。 It was a great book with interesting characters, mystery, and some surprisingly emotional moments。 It strongly reminded me of another one of my favorite books, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo。 It’s also pretty rare to come across horror novels with a happy ending, but this did it。

Nicki Hewell

4。5 stars rounded up。 I expected a different ending (and I like my ending better tbh)。 But it was a gripping read and I had a hard time putting it down。 Since it’s a crime mystery, I won’t say anything else on it to avoid giving anything away。

Honestly I enjoyed this so much more than I was expecting! I got it as part of the BOTM membership and was not disappointed。 A little cheesy at times but I appreciated the way it didn’t attempt to do any dramatic and mostly predictable twists。 The pacing was just enough to keep you interested。 Would read more by this author

I feel like this one had so much potential, but it was really misleading as a thriller。 To me, it was more of a paranormal mystery, since nothing really left me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next。 The plot was more telling something that had already happened years ago and we were trying to figure out why it happened throughout the book。I had pretty much guessed what was happening though pretty early on, which just left me a bit bored throughout。 It wasn't bad by any m I feel like this one had so much potential, but it was really misleading as a thriller。 To me, it was more of a paranormal mystery, since nothing really left me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next。 The plot was more telling something that had already happened years ago and we were trying to figure out why it happened throughout the book。I had pretty much guessed what was happening though pretty early on, which just left me a bit bored throughout。 It wasn't bad by any means, I think I just was expecting a lot more out of this one。 。。。more
